First lecture on diffusionless transformations and martensite.
continuation of the discussion of diffusional transformations and the hardening of steel.

Homework 5 covers both diffusional and diffusionless transformations. It has 5 problems, so you'll have 2 weeks to complete it (it is still weighted the same as the others, however, since they are short-answer questions).

This will be your last homework, given the fact that lab 3 covers much of the transformations we go over in the 2nd half of this course.

Here's the article about the Damascus Sabre....so now that we've gone over the diffusional transformations, what's the secret?!?! :-)
Check out this article....it's incredible!

As sent in the email:

Field trip to Arcelor-Mittal Steel (whoo hoo!) on November 20th.

Meet in the courtyard of LeBow/CAT/Bossone to promptly leave at 12:30.

We'll be back by 4:30 or earlier.

Bring a jacket (you'll be somewhat outside in the mill).

Guidelines for the final presentation on December 4th (1-3pm) in Bossone 302.
4th homework: on precipitation.
first steel lecture: diffusional transformations.
3rd precipitation lecture....GP zones, Al-Cu, TTT diagrams, spinodal decomposition.
2nd precipitation lecture
1st Precipitation lecture

We have two lecture number fours. Note the file name on the first one is lecture number three.

So, when you download the solidification lectures, it might be good to name them, lectures 5-8, because that's what they are in real time.

hope this clears up any issues. I'll send an email, too.

this is the last lecture on solidification, and concentrates on alloy solidification and ingot microstructure. i'll bring an ingot to class, too! :-)
more solidification....discussion of dendrites in pure materials, and beginning of discussion on alloy solidification.
