New Postings
I've posted the new set of lecture notes, the solutions to homework 2, and the new homework problems for this.  There are considerably less problems than in the past two weeks and expect everyone to have tried more than half of the problems by Thursday.  Sorry for making everyone wait until today to have these things available.  Please contact me if you have any isues.

TA Duties
I think I will set office hours.  A few people have asked to see me on Thursday afternoons between lunchtime and class time - let's make this a regular thing.  I have secured a room: CURTIS 455.  Let's meet there at around 1230 every Thursday.  This does not preclude the regular help session on Tuesday evenings - we can meet both times!

Also I know and recognize many people in the class.  We still had a strong showing but I missed some of you in today's lecture.  We do not take role but please be on time and please do not cut!

I don't have access to a rolling class list.  If you have already dropped the course, please let me know so can take you off the mailing list.  Again I want everyone to do well and will always make myself available to you.  You have an opportunity to learn things in this class that you won't get in any other undregrad class: please take advantage!  Also always complain about me if and when I do a bad job at explaining things or meeting with you.  Please continue to try problems and let me always help you!  I'm keepinp "college" hours this term and you can usually reach me by e-mail 'til about ~0130...

Also there were significant typos in the homework I posted last week.  I have fixed many my mistakes and reposted it.  However I'm a little disapointed/worried that no one complained about the mistakes - they were NOT trivial :-(

Last Week's Quizzes.
It looks like I forgot to return your graded quizzes to you today.  If you want them before Thursday stop by my office at Lebow 340.  Otherwise I'll give them to you at the end of class Thursday.

Downloading Stuff
It seems that the "in.materials" download section is getting out of control...After selecting the "Downloads" link you can filter out the files from other classes by selecting the "Classes" link on the left of the page and then selecting our class.  Only and all files from MATE 370 should appear at that time.

New posting of some homework solutions

I have posted solutions to problems that have non-proof answers.  I hope this gives you an idea of how you are doing.  Please have questions about as many things as possible for me tomorrow in class and especially at the help session afterwards.

Until now there has been no discussion from me about the room for the help session.  I think we'll just hang out a little after the class and figure out who's all interested in going and then we'll all head out together and find an empty room.

Important Notice => Room Change!!

We have been given a room change by someone up on high.  Sorry for the late notice - we just got the message.  The new room is CURTIS 459.  Although its way up on the 4th floor, it should be much more comfortable to be in.

Also I will post the homework solutions on Thursday/Friday after the 1st quiz.  I will also be issuing new problems which will be more difficult.  Please always be trying problems and e-mail me to meet with me to discuss any issues you have.  I will always try to make time for students.  I would like to see everyone do well and and pick-up a couple of things from this class that they can use for their jobs or subsequent classes...Don't forget we can do a help session tomorrow after the lecture.

Logisitical Changes

It looks like we've changed the format of the class a little.  Most of us have agreed that the quizzes will be on Thursdays and the help sessions will be on Tuesdays after class.  If anyone would like more personal help please e-mail me and let me know if and when you would like to stop by my office in Lebow 340.  Please have some questions about the material for Tuesday's class and the help session later on in the afternoon.

I'm thinking about setting office hours...Think about what woud be a good time and let me know.

PS: Again if anyone has trouble with linear algebra please let me know.

Tuesday's class

Please try the following problems out of the 1st homework set:  1-5, 14, 21, 24.  Please have tried these by Tuesday - take advantage of the weekend.  If you can do these, then you probably "get it."  If not just ask for help.  Prof Kalidindi is moving more slowly than he would like in his lectures and would prefer that you all can do AT LEAST the above problems so he can begin to cover more difficult material.  So far as the lecture corresponds to the homework problems you should be able to do every problem except for the last one but again you are asked to demonstrate confidence specifically with the above problems by Tuesday's class.  Problems 1 through 24 are fair game for next Thursday's quiz.

Have a good weekend.

Help Session

It seems there are some logistical issues with the help session.  The help session can't be in the materials conference room on Wednesday evening; there is a Senior Design meeting at that time and place.  A few students showed up at 1700 but there was some confusion.  We eventually moved to the lounge next door and had an OK session but I'm afraid I may have missed a few people...

We can do another one Friday or next Monday.  If you haven't had this material before you might need extra help.  Please try some problems and let me know if you need help and when would be the best time to have a problem-solving session.

Also please try some problems and have questions to ask for tomorrow's class.  With regard to the Self Test, please do not address those in class but see me personally - let's keep the more difficult things for classtime.

 -Brendan

PS: Hari the other TA is out of the country but should be back by the end of the week and you should meet him soon.

Today's class

So everyone has an idea of what they've gotten themselves into...Please be e-mailing me about what time of the week there should be extra help sessions - no one has done so yet (brd24@drexel.edu) - we should get this resolved quickly.  I need to know how enthusiastic people are about getting extra help so I can start looking for an available and appropriately-sized room.  Prof Kalidindi has said that Wednesday from 1700 to 1800 in the Materials Department Conference Room (Lebow 348) is the time and place respectively.  Unless you want otherwise, that's where I'll be tomorrow at 5...Also don't forget you can e-mail me or stop by Lebow 340 if you want extra extra time...

So it seems like Prof Kalidindi has covered up to the dot product and a little about the Kronecker delta in lecture.  Please try at least up to exercise 6 in the homework for Thursday.  Please have questions ready.

BTY: If you have not gotten at least on e-mail from me, I may not have you on the class list.  Please complain about it!

Basic Matrix Test

Prof Kalidindi has asked that I give you a self test to see if you are familiar with matrix operations.  It is posted for download with the class notes and first homework.  You will not be graded on this but if you have any trouble with any of these problems you should seek immediate help.

Even if you have not taken linear algebra yet you can certainly learn this material and do well in this class but you must seek help and put some effort into learning if you're not already familiar.  Don't forget that Prof Kalidindi's book is available for sale.  We have moved the books to the MSE main office in Lebow 344.  Please see Judy Trachtman if you want a copy.

-Brendan

Download-able items

It seems as though you are now able to see the items I've posted.  Please read through the lecture notes and try some problems.  See you all tomorrow.

-Brendan

Extra Help Sessions

You may want/need extra time with the TA's.  If you would like us to have some help sessions to review quiz solutions and homework problems, start thinking about what time is best and we'll talk about this on Tuesday.

-Brendan

Technical Difficulties

We are having some difficulty giving permissions to see files. The files are posted but exist somewhere on the internet where no one can find them...It looks like you're all going to have a homework-free weekend but these issues should be solved by Monday...

-Brendan

Posted Items - 22 September

Both the first week's lecture notes and the first homework problem set are posted.  You can access the materials by selecting the "Downloads" link and downloading the appropriate items from the page that comes up.

Please read through the first few pages of the lecture notes and try problems 1 and 2 of the homework to understand the concept of the summation convention.

FYI: You'll see that the homework problems follow the lecture notes.  You will only be quizzed on what is covered in lecture.  By Thursday you'll know what homework problems are elligible to be on the the following Tuesday's quiz.
