Printing from...

A printer is...

I forgot my MSE domain username and password!

The department currently provides basic black and white printing services to its students and faculty.  The printer can be found in the Materials Main Office (LeBow 344) next to the copier.

Installing the Canon Color Laser on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, & 7 (Automatic driver download for 32-bit and 64-bit systems)

  1. You must be connected to Drexel's network, either directly over Ethernet, wirelessly through Dragonfly, or remotely through Drexel's VPN client.
  2. Click Start -> Run.
  3. Type \\mse-files and click Ok.
    1. If you are prompted for a user name and password, enter your Materials domain credentials in the form of:
          Username: mse\username
          Password: Your MSE domain password
  4. Right click on the printer labeled CanonColorLaser
  5. Choose Connect.
    1. If prompted to install printer drivers over the network, click to allow.
  6. Check your list of printers for 'Canon iR C4580 PCL6 on mse-files'.
  7. The next time you print, you will be prompted for your research group's copier id and access code.  You will need to get this from your adviser in order to print.
    1. If you want to store this, you can do so by going into the printer properties, clicking on the Device Settings tab, and clicking Settings next to Job Accounting.  Type in the ID and password, and then click Verify to make sure they're correct.  Then uncheck Confirm ID/Password When Printing to prevent the box from popping up.
Your files will not print by default.  Instead, they are stored on the copier until you walk up, enter your id and password, and follow the instructions on the wall to print a document stored in one of the mailboxes.  By default, it is stored in the first mailbox.

Installing the Canon Color Laser on Mac OS X (Manual driver download)

  1. Connect to the MSE file server
    1. Press Apple-K to bring up the Connect to Server dialog box.
    2. Type in smb://files.mse.drexel.edu/
    3. Enter your MSE username and password when prompted (remember to use mse\ before your username)
    4. When asked what folder to mount, choose Software
  2. Inside the software share, head to PrinterDrivers -> Mac Canon c4580 Driver -> Mac OS X UFRII v2.00.dmg
  3. Mount the DMG file and run the installer.  This will install the Canon c4580 driver.
  4. Go to the Printer control panel and add an IP-LPD based printer.
    1. Use prt01.materials.drexel.edu as the address
    2. Select a driver -- to filter the list, type 4580.  Only one result should appear.  Choose it.
    3. When prompted for options, set these:
      Side Paper Deck: On
      Output Options: Finisher W1
      Job Accounting: On
  5. Finish and test.
  6. These rules are typed from memory, so if they're not clear, please let me know.

Can't print?

Are you trying to print to the main office printer and finding that your documents just sit in your print queue?  Your computer stores your MSE username and password in order to reconnect across the network to print.  Through various methods and at seemingly random times, Windows clears its saved password cache.  How can you tell?

Try this.  On the computer in question, go to Start -> Run, and type \\mse-files.  This will prompt you for your username and password.  Enter them in as described above, remembering to enter it along with the domain.  Once you can access the list of printers and file shares, the printer should work again.  You may have select all of the queued print jobs, right-click on them, and click Restart.

Is this a Materials printer that isn't in the main office?

  • Power cycle the printer once or twice
  • Make sure it's still connected to the computer or network
  • Open the printer cover and reseat the toner cartridge

If you still can't get the printer working, contact me and I'll have a look.

Where do I get more toner?

If the main office printer is out of toner, please contact me and I'll make sure more gets ordered.

If a printer in a research office, grad office, or lab is out of toner or supplies, it is that office's responsibility to order more.  Most offices consist of members from more than one research group--if this is the case, the group advisors should come to an agreement for cost sharing of the supplies.  Supplies include toner, paper, replacement drums and print assemblies.

Oh no!  My printer is dead!

Printers, like all technology, have lifespans.  Some are shorter than others--just because some printers continue to chug out pages decades later doesn't mean that another printer will work more than 3 months.  If the printer is under warranty, get in touch with the manufacturer.  If you bought an add-on warranty, follow their instructions for filing a claim.  You will almost always need an RMA number to send back in a printer.

If the printer is completely kaput, then it's time to buy a new one.  Important considerations include...

  • What do the consumables cost?
This is perhaps the most important consideration of all.  Printers are practically given away by manufacturers, who know they'll recoup the loss many times over the printer's life.  If you want to refill your cartridges, google the model # of the cartridge + refill kits.  Some kits are harder to use than others
  • Will it be able to handle the workload you throw at it?
Most printers have a monthly duty cycle.  Divide this number by 2 and make sure that number is higher than what you print in a month.
  • Does it have a warranty?
