Material Failure Analyst - Metals

DESCRIPTION:

 

The DuPont Engineering Research and Technologies Materials Engineering and Research group provides consulting and experimental services in materials selection, corrosion engineering, physical failure analysis, reliability improvement, and problem solutions of plant process and mechanical equipment. We provide support to all DuPont manufacturing operations in the U.S. and global, capital projects, R&D, and Marketing for new business development. The current need is for a specialist in metallurgy and failure analysis. This individual will provide support to manufacturing, engineering and research organizations across the DuPont Co.

 

Work responsibilities include

 

  • Perform detailed physical failure analyses with timely reports to expedite the application of findings to the benefit of plant performance.
  • Application of metallurgy, materials science and characterization technology to investigate and improve the performance of materials in real usage.
  • Supervision of the materials characterization and failure analysis lab and personnel located at the DuPont Experimental Station, Wilmington, DE.
  • Use and development of materials characterization techniques
  • Promote physical failure analysis and materials characterization within the Corporation. Some U.S. and International travel may be involved, since the coordination and presentation of results of the work might be done at plant and vendor locations.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

 A B.S. degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science or Materials Engineering with 5 to 10 years of experience or a MS or Ph.D. with 5 years of experience in failure analysis and materials characterization is required for this position. Demonstrated knowledge in the following technical areas is also required.

 

  • Metallurgy and materials science of steel, stainless steel and nickel alloys
  • Materials characterization, analyses of microstructure and fracture surfaces using electron microscopy
  • Metallographic and surface analysis techniques
  • Mechanical testing of materials
  • Comprehensive report writing and presentation skills to communicate results
  • Windows-based computer hardware and software expertise
  • The ability to handle several jobs at a time, including a mixture of projects with some as short as one hour to one day and some as long as several months
  • The knowledge experience to solve complex technical problems.
  • Leadership and networking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a respectful manner in a diverse work environment.
