Broken sodium borosilicate glass hollow microsphere, to be used in an infrared reflective roof coating.  The sphere is 120µm in diameter with a wall thickness of 400nm.  This image was taken by MSE undergraduate Eric Eisele, who, along with 4 other MSE students, are working to reduce energy use in home heating and cooling as part of their senior design project.
